Home Conditions and Employment of Mental Defectives

چکیده
I am indebted to Dr. I. G. Davies, Medical Officer of Health and Professor of Public Health, University of Leeds, for his permission to publish the following article dealing with facts relating to social conditions of mentally handicapped persons in the City. A recent survey of the occupations and home conditions of mentally defective persons in an industrial area of roughly half a million population is of interest firstly from the point of view of the changing nature of housing accommodation, secondly from the enlightened attitude of employers of labour to the employment of the mentally handicapped and, thirdly, from the advantage to the community of the Mental Deficiency Act of 1927 which empowered Local Authorities to establish Industry and Occupation Centres. The Survey represents a comparison between conditions in the year 1929 and the year, 1949.

The Constitution of these Associations varies according to Local conditions but ...

The types of psychological problem noted in this article appear to have two common qualities?the likelihood of being ignored, and an urgent need of consideration. Their likelihood of being ignored probably arises from two main causes?long-standing blindness to their very existence, or a hurried and even half-conscious forgetting of them whenever they stir the minds of administrators in, and aut...
متن کاملMental Deficiency: The Changing Outlook
This new addition to mental deficiency literature is contributed by psychologists and will certainly serve as a reference book for their research and conclusions on the subject. It is clearly written, but occasionally heavy; the work described, theoretical and practical , leads the reader imperceptibly to the conviction that training, socialisation and employment are possible for the great majo...

went out immediately after. He kept all he earned and was the envy of his fellows. In this unassuming way was started a system of training through employment out of our hands. It was, however, in Agriculture that daily licence had its main development before the Second World War and here it appears too, to have arisen somewhat casually out of a social contact with a neighbouring "gentleman farm...
